Sneak peek – this weeks DIY Friday

Ugh, I am so excited to reveal this weeks DIY Friday. So excited in fact that I’m going to do that annoying thing where I share with you a nondescript photo, and then not tell you what it is … 

This weekend I struck charity shop gold. I’ve been looking for an item like this for a couple of weeks, and was tres excited when I found this most delightful piece on Saturday. It is ever so excellent. I also picked up some trimmings from Home Focus at Hickeys, one of which was the delightfully fun black bauble trim which I used earlier this year in my lamp revamp DIY. I’m such a sucker for bauble trim. Kitschy awesomeness. 
So, does anyone want to take a stab and guess at what it is? … Tune in Friday for the reveal 😉
And with that, I will bid you adieu internet friends. We have a special guest staying with us this week so I must run off and ensure all the pillows are prepped et cetera. xx A

It’s gonna be a …

Friday, you sexy beast, we meet again. This particular Friday we will be celebrating with a bit of bubbly – yesterday husband was offered an amazing IT job and we are over the moon, to say the least. 
We both graduated from college in the last two years {as mature students … we’re not that young}, and there was a lot more hope for husband to get a job in his field as he is an all round IT genius / graduated with top of the top marks. I won’t bore you with Ireland’s continued recession details, but we’ve been waiting for this to happen for a long time, and we were close to giving up = depression central. That is, until yesterday. Hubby immediately handed in his notice at his current job {which is completely unrelated to IT} and has been on a cloud ever since. I was a mess of proud / bubbling wife business yesterday. I’m sure it was very embarrassing. 

And way more importantly, husband can finally make use of the IT Crowd inspired cross stitch I made him and has been waiting for such a time to proudly display it on a desk. The old brain wheels are crafting up another QR code cross stitch as an alternative / back up desk accompaniment just in case. Hells yes.

To conclude today’s post, I will quote what was read out at my graduation from the CEO of Microsoft Ireland, “always be nice to nerds because chances are, one day you’ll work for one“. And in some cases – marry one.

Deceptive dust covers – revisited

This week I’ve been spending some quality time with an old DIY of mine; I had some books that I’ve been meaning to re-cover for ages, and there was no better time than the present to cover them. Especially when one has a head cold and is house bound. 
I first thought of this idea years ago for some of my favourite books which were a bit too colourful or unsightly for my liking, so I came up with a cheap, cheerful and crafty solution – deceptive dust covers. An oldie, but a goodie.

Below – you can see the new covers in action on some of the more colourful books in our ammunition, along with the ‘before’ pic for comparison … 

You of course don’t need to go dark with your dust covers – that’s just my preference. It would be just as easy to do the opposite and cheer up otherwise bland and dark books by using bright construction paper. I’m just partial to old looking books. 

I will be the first to admit my deceptive dust covers idea partly came about to temporarily suppress my dream to have a library full of old books when I grow up. The smell of rich mahogany, leather bound books, ladders, long hours reading on couches and twirling. Basically just becoming Belle from Beauty and the Beast. 

I had to finish with this picture of Toshi – there was a book laying open on the table, the windows were open and the wind was flipping the pages. She looked caught between terrified and amazed. Silly kitty. And of course, you can check out my full dust cover tutorial here if you’re curious. xx A
