Window woes

If you can see the sun and/or you don’t have to wear three layers of clothes at the moment, count yourself lucky. Here in Ireland we skipped spring and summer, and headed straight into next winter. Grey skies, biblical downpours, freezing temperatures and snow. Thanks to the reminders going around social networking sites, this time last year it was 16 degrees in Dublin. I didn’t even bother opening the blinds last weekend …

They remained closed for two reasons. We’re renters, so there is a limit to what we can do when it comes to fixing minor issues – our dining room juts out from our apartment and consists of three floor-to-ceiling windows. In the summer it’s amazing, but in the winter = ice box. We close the blinds as our first defense against the cold. Our second defense was to hang a curtain rod across where our living room meets our dining room, to close and isolate the dining area at night in the winter months {mad props to handyman father}.

Unfortunately, they only keep out so much. I found a type of blinds over on the VELUX® website that offer the perfect solution – Energy Blinds have a special layer of insulation to keep in the heat and improve the temperature of the room. Absolute perfection. Except there is one massive set back – VELUX blinds can only be applied to their own brand of windows, and our existing windows don’t compete. Massive sad face. But hey, a girl can dream.

I also spotted on the VELUX website something I was pretty surprised to see this side of the Atlantic – insect screens. I’ve been saying for years that I don’t understand why houses over here don’t have them. If any of you have VELUX windows installed in your home, I’m mad jealous. More info of course can be found over on their website – www.veluxshop.ie.

So until the summer time when it’s warm enough to use our dining room again, hubby and I have found dining a la coffee table a completely acceptable alternative. Although I am starting to show my age when I try and stand up after a full meal …

Image 3 cred.
VELUX were kind enough to sponsor this post about my winter window woes, which I’m pretty excited about. Excited about the sponsor bit – not the cold state of our dining room. In case that needed clarification. All views are my own.

Thrifty things – coral centerpiece

I took a sneaky detour yesterday into a local charity shop. I was in said shop for about 20 seconds when I saw this delight on a shelf. I immediately pulled one of these in my best southern accent …
For €8 at Age Action, it was a complete steel. It’s mounted on a marble disk, way heavier than it looks, and it’s quite rough so kitty’s have made their approval for face-rubbing purposes. A quick scrub once I got home and it came up gleaming.
Warning, boring rant – regarding natural things on the market like coral, antlers, framed spiders/insects etc – they never sit right with me. I want to cry whenever I see things like that especially if it’s supporting an industry to plow a seabed or snuff an animal. I will defend myself by saying this was in a charity shop, therefore I was not directly supporting an industry of that nature. End rant.
I’d also like to take a moment to write about a Facebook-fueled attack on my website that happened last night. For those of you brought to my site thanks to the lovely {and grossly misinformed} link details, welcome 🙂 Unfortunately, the woman who pointed you in my direction was a bit out of her element to say the least. Said blog post has temporarily been removed due to unsolicited slander and bullying. It’s unfortunate when fellow crafters and bloggers attack each other in this uncalled manner.
Well, things can only get better. I was up all night with a lovely fever and strep throat. Can someone come over and sing soft kitty to me? Happy Wednesday homies – we’re halfway there 😉 xx A

Living room makeover – painting update

At long last, our canvas is at peace. After my previous attempt, I knew exactly how I wanted to paint it, and finally finished it late last night.

I’ve really enjoyed uncomplicated artwork as of late, so I thought why not magic some up for myself. I wanted it to pop, for it to remain monochromatic, and something artsy fartsy yet simple going on in the middle. I also chose to hang it up compared to it previously sitting on our shelf, which I think has made a huge difference.

At the moment I’m conscious of it looking a bit pretentious. But I’m really, really happy with it this time around, so that’s trumping my hesitations.

And below, the ‘work’ I had done on it previously. I felt a whole mess of guilt painting over it at first thanks to your incredibly sweet and thoughtful comments, but for me, it’s previous state made me want to barf a little I felt wasn’t to its full potential.

I finished painting late last night, and when husband saw it this morning all I heard was “Woah. That looks a lot better” from down the hallway. Happy face.

I hope you guys had a relaxing and / or refreshing weekend! It’ll be Mothers Day on Sunday here in Ireland so I’m determined for no last minute malarky this year. I have a couple tricks up my sleeve …
